Outreach: Week 5

Written Jan 31, 2020:

Hi guys! Welcome back. This has been our last week in Malawi so the feeling is a bit bittersweet.

We were back at the Blantyre base this week where God continued to move and speak to us.

Tuesday morning we did some practical things like extending our visas to stay another week, going to the bank to sort out things for Zimbabwe, and groceries and some other things. God really blessed us with smoothness that morning and we had no problems with any of the processes we were warned of. That afternoon we got to rest and our team ate snacks and watched the Jesus Film together in English for the first time (we had only seen it dubbed in Chichewa since we’re in Malawi).

Wednesday we did morning bible study and personal devotion time, then had a time of worship and intercession as a base. After that we got to do work duties and cleaned up the dining room as well as the community center. That afternoon we did kids ministry which was so much fun. What started with 6 kids at the beginning of our program turned into 50 or more by the end and we were all having so much fun.

Thursday was full on with devotion then worship and intercession in the morning, and after we went to a YWAM primary school and did a program for each of the classes years 1-3. They were so sweet and well behaved and I could tell they really had an understanding and love for God. Sadly we didn’t have time to go to all of the classes, but we still got to talk to so many kids. After lunch we split into two groups and one group prepared for youth ministry while me and Sharon prepared for widow ministry where we go to meet with and encourage widows. We got to share a bible lesson and sing for the widows and they loved it. They were so sweet! That night before dinner we played uno as a team and had a blast laughing and having fun.

Friday we got up super early and went back to the primary school to lead the school in morning devotion. But what we did instead is performed the gospel skit for them and got everyone to sing some fun worship songs. In the afternoon we went to the bible study of a friend from base and only two other people were there, but I think God wanted us there for that bible study to speak to us as a team. We each got prayed over and prayed over each other and we’re reminded to trust completely on God.

Saturday was our day off and we went on a safari ride at a game park and saw some beautiful animals like zebras, wildebeests, antelopes, nyalas, giraffes, and other animals. It really felt like a relaxing day and we all rested very well on Saturday.

The team!

Sunday we went to church with a bunch of the people from the base, and a few of us were in charge of the kids ministry for the day. It was a great time of teaching and sharing on the balance between freedom in the spirit and complete order in the church. We also met some new people and afterwards we spent the rest of the day packing and preparing to leave for Zimbabwe tomorrow morning.

Me and Daph had skits made!

I can’t believe it’s already time to move on from Malawi. I can’t even describe how fast the time has flown. We’ve had such amazing opportunities and revelations and life altering experiences in Malawi these last five weeks and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I thank God so much for showing us and teaching us so well and for protecting and providing for our team in really amazing ways.

I was thinking about when we first arrived at the Blantyre base our first week in Malawi, I was terrified of all of the ministries and I secretly was wishing they would all get cancelled because I just didn’t know what to do. But through these weeks and especially our two and a half weeks in Dzaleka has really changed me for the better and I wouldn’t have realized it if we hadn’t spent this last week back at Blantyre. This week we were talking about our daily schedule and I found myself excited to hear about opportunities like door-to-door ministry which would have scared me to death five weeks ago. I’ve been pulled out of my comfort zone so many times that now I can look back and see that growth really does come from discomfort and boldness and just going for it. I’ve found that it’s way easier to do something difficult if you don’t think about it, and just go. God will take care of the rest.

That’s all I have for now, thank you all for your continued prayers and support and interest. I really enjoy writing these updates for you guys and I hope you enjoy them too. I love you all so much! Until next time.

Hugs from Blantyre for the last time!
